How AI works
at Acier.

Acier uses AI to identify, value, and organize the items you scan. This page explains, in plain language, what AI we use, what it touches, and what it deliberately does not do.

/// The short version

P.01One AI partner

A single enterprise AI provider handles cloud analysis. We don't share your data with anyone else's model.

P.02Device-first

Live capture, object detection, and OCR all run on your phone. Only what's needed for the request you make leaves the device.

P.03Estimates, not decisions

AI suggests identifications and values. You decide. We never auto-approve, deny, or bind anything about you.

P.04Always editable

Any AI-generated identification or value can be corrected, overridden, or deleted by you at any time.

/// 01

AI providers we use

Acier uses a single third-party enterprise AI provider for all cloud-based identification, valuation, and policy analysis. We do not share your data with any other large language model provider. The current provider can be confirmed by contacting contact@acier.io.

On your device, Acier uses Apple’s Vision and ARKit frameworks for live frame analysis, object detection, and optical character recognition (OCR). These on-device operations run entirely on your phone and do not transmit images or text to Acier or any third party.

We may change AI providers or model versions over time as the technology and our needs evolve. Material changes will be reflected on this page with an updated effective date.

What we use AI for

The Service uses AI for the following purposes:

  • Item identification. Recognizing items in photos you capture, including brand, model, materials, and condition.
  • Estimated valuation. Generating an estimated replacement value for identified items, refined by external market data where available.
  • Specialized capture modes. Identifying higher-value or specialty items in dedicated workflows for jewelry and watches, wine and spirits, collectibles and trading cards, firearms, sneakers, and recorded media.
  • Insurance policy analysis. Extracting coverage limits, sublimits, deductibles, endorsements, and exclusions from policy documents you upload.
  • Coverage gap analysis. Comparing your inventory totals against your policy’s coverage limits to highlight potential gaps.
  • Scan refinement. Re-analyzing items with additional photos or context, deduplicating items across multi-image room scans, and identifying items you may have missed.
/// 03

What data is processed

Cloud AI features process only the content needed for the specific request you make — typically the photos in the scan and any text you have added. Voice notes are transcribed on your device first; the resulting text, not the audio, is what is processed. For insurance analysis, the policy document you upload is processed for that request only.

/// What never leaves your device

Your account credentials, your encryption keys, and your inventory in decrypted form. Encryption keys are derived from your credentials and stored exclusively on your device — Acier never has them.

/// 04

Data retention and training

Acier operates AI requests through a stateless processing pipeline. Your photos and analysis content are not written to any Acier inventory database; identified items are stored on your device under our zero-knowledge architecture (see the Privacy Policy). Capture images that must be staged for AI processing are held in private storage with signed URLs that expire within one hour.

Our AI provider processes API requests under its commercial terms, which provide that customer inputs and outputs are not used to train its models. We retain operational metadata (such as request timestamps, model version, and high-level result fields like item category and confidence) for service monitoring, fraud prevention, and debugging. We do not retain the underlying images, voice transcriptions, or policy document contents after a request completes.

/// 05

Third-party enrichment services

To ground valuations in real market data, identification results may be enriched with information from third-party reference services. The minimum identifier needed for the lookup is sent — for example, an ISBN, a wine producer and vintage, a sneaker style code, or a graded card certification number. These services receive the identifier, not your photos, account information, or other inventory.

Accuracy, confidence, and limitations

AI identification and valuation are estimates only. They are not professional appraisals, financial advice, or insurance recommendations. Where the model’s confidence in an identification is low, Acier withholds the estimated value rather than display a figure that could mislead you.

You can edit, correct, or delete any AI-generated identification or valuation at any time. For high-value or insurance-relevant items, we recommend obtaining an independent professional appraisal.

/// 07

AI safety and governance controls

Acier applies a layered set of safeguards to AI requests. These include controls designed to resist prompt-injection attempts, limit abusive usage patterns, validate the structure and reasonableness of AI outputs, screen inputs against prohibited content categories, and maintain an audit trail of governance events for security review. We update and adapt these safeguards over time as AI capabilities and the threat environment evolve.

/// 08

No automated decisions about you

Acier does not use AI to make decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects about you. AI outputs are advisory: they populate your inventory and surface possible coverage gaps for your review. Acier does not approve, deny, or bind insurance, does not deny you access to the Service based on AI-generated assessments, and does not profile you for advertising.

/// 09

Your choices and rights

You can stop using AI features at any time. Inventory items you have already created remain on your device under your control. Data subject rights — including access, correction, deletion, and portability — are described in our Privacy Policy. To exercise a right or ask a question about AI specifically, contact us at contact@acier.io.

/// 10

Children

Acier is not directed to children under 13 and we do not knowingly process AI requests from accounts belonging to children under 13. See our Privacy Policy for details.

/// 11

Changes to this disclosure

We will update this page when we change AI providers or models, add new AI-powered features, change what data is processed, or change our governance controls in a material way. The “Last updated” date above reflects the most recent revision.
